DOUBLE CHIN REMOVAL THROUGH KYBELLA® IN NEW YORK

If you feel self-conscious about your face and neck because of your double chin, you are not alone.  It is a common problem, affecting those who may or may not be overweight. Many people choose to undergo surgery to treat their double chin, also known as submental fullness. While surgery for double chin works well and is often incorporated into a facelift or necklift procedure, there is now an FDA-approved, non-surgical option for patients.

Known as Kybella®, this injectable treatment is highly effective at giving patients an attractive new jawline, and no downtime is required!

At Hudson Face and Eye, we are committed to bringing you the most advanced technology in cosmetic treatments and procedures. We’ve helped hundreds of people feel great about themselves through our state-of-the-art techniques.

WHAT CAUSES A DOUBLE CHIN?

While many people who suffer from a double chin are carrying around excess weight, it is actually not uncommon for submental fullness to occur in patients who are at their ideal weight. In these cases, the fat stored under the chin is resistant to dietary changes and exercise. There is a genetic component in how and where your body stores fat, and some people are simply destined to store fat in the chin due to their genes.

Others may have submental fullness as a result of weight gain. All patients who are making healthy lifestyle changes and losing weight tend to have “problem areas” of fatty tissue that just don’t seem to go. When this problem area is under the chin, it is particularly visible and troubling, as it is difficult to de-emphasize the face and neck through clothing choices.

Another factor that causes submental fullness is the loss of elasticity in the skin over time. As this occurs, the skin around the jowls may sag, contributing to the double chin. Thus, your double chin may be the result of sagging skin, fat storage, or both.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR KYBELLA®?

Kybella® is an excellent option for patients who have excess fat under their chin, as it directly targets the fat cells. However, Kybella® will not treat sagging skin, so it is best performed for patients who have good skin elasticity in this area. For patients who have excess or drooping skin along their jawline, a necklift may be a better choice. Kybella® is a permanent treatment for submental fullness, so it is considered to be a fantastic, non-surgical option with results similar to liposuction (but no downtime for healing)!

HOW DOES KYBELLA® WORK?

The Kybella® treatment is a series of small injections under the chin. The Kybella® injections have deoxycholic acid as their active ingredient; this acid is actually one that occurs naturally in our digestive system. Its role in digestion is to help breakdown fats in our diet, and it does not target other types of compounds. Because of its specificity to fat, when injected under the chin, the deoxycholic acid in Kybella® destroys the fat cells but does not damage any other tissues. The fat cells die off and thus can no longer store additional fat. Because of this, Kybella® is a permanent solution to your double chin.

BEFORE AND AFTER

WHAT IS KYBELLA® TREATMENT LIKE?

You should seek out a highly-skilled physician to perform your Kybella® treatment. As an Oculofacial Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kashyap has extensive training and a natural aesthetic sense that combine to make her an excellent choice for your treatment. She will first examine the natural contours of your jaw and face and determine the best placements for the Kybella® injections, making markings to guide her in producing your new chin profile.

Each of the small injections will contain a numbing agent. During the injections and for a short time after the treatment, you may experience a mild burning sensation. Most patients are quite comfortable during and after treatment, and many say that the treatment was significantly less painful than they expected.

The total treatment time is usually only 15-20 minutes, and you are able to return to your daily activities right away after your session. While you may experience a bit of redness afterward, it will not be very noticeable and it will not prevent you from going back to your regular routine. You may have some slight bruising for a few days, but no downtime for recovery is necessary.

Over the course of the next 2-3 weeks, you will notice a gradual diminishing of the fat under your chin as the cells die off and the fat is removed by the body. Many patients choose to have more than one session to further reduce their submental fullness; you can have up to 6 sessions, spaced roughly one month apart. The number of treatments you need depends on your particular anatomy and how much fat is stored under your chin. You can get an idea of how many treatments you may need to reach your goals when you meet with Dr. Kashyap for your consultation.
