PRP Therapy: A Promising Way to Regrow Your Hair

Some hair shedding is natural, and we all lose an average of about 50 hairs each day.  Unfortunately, some of us shed more hair than normal and thus have thinning hair. Others have hair that does not grow as it should, resulting in a receding or thin hairline. There are many factors that contribute to whether you have hair loss or difficulty growing hair, such as stress, certain medications, illness, and your genetics.

Fortunately, there are several treatments available that can help you to restore thickness to your hair and a full hairline. We offer fully customized hair restoration plans, including PRP therapy, a state-of-the-art approach that can stimulate hair growth without surgery or scarring. In fact, recent research has shown that PRP therapy can stimulate 30-40% more hair growth in patients that receive it.

HOW DOES PRP THERAPY STIMULATE HAIR GROWTH?
PRP, short for platelet-rich plasma, is made from natural components of your own blood, and it has been used therapeutically for decades in medical treatments. In order to obtain PRP for treatments, your blood will be collected through a regular blood draw, similar to that performed when you have laboratory tests done. Your blood will then be processed to remove the red and white blood cells, leaving behind the plasma and the platelets.  This remaining portion of the blood is rich in growth factors that can promote the division of cells and stimulate the body’s natural repair processes. Because of this, PRP has been used in the past to treat injuries and speed recovery.

Scientists have also discovered that PRP can stimulate skin growth and enhance the health of tissue. Because the health of the hair follicle and growth of the hairs depend on the skin, improvements in skin health can stimulate hair growth. When injected into specific locations along the scalp, PRP therapy has been shown to stimulate hair growth, prolong the lifespan of hairs that are growing, and activate dormant hair follicles.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY PRP THERAPY SESSION?
Most patients describe PRP therapy as fast, convenient, and painless. After your blood has been collected and processed, your scalp will be prepared for injections using a local anesthetic that will diminish sensation and enhance your comfort during the procedure. PRP will be injected by your highly-skilled clinician in targeted locations along your scalp. These locations are chosen precisely to enhance your hairline and thicken your hair.

After PRP therapy, you may experience some minor swelling and redness at the injection sites. These will go away quickly, and you may return to your normal daily activities right after your procedure.  There is almost no chance of having any side effects, as the PRP injections are made from something that comes from your own body.  Depending on your natural hairline, hair thickness, and aesthetic goals, we may recommend that you have more than one session, as results improve with each session. Because the hair growth that is stimulated through PRP therapy is a natural process that takes time, you will need to wait several weeks to see your results. Our patients are thrilled with the additional hair growth that they have achieved through PRP therapy!
